Conservation - COSTA RICA
Our Conservation in Costa Rica Project

Why Costa Rica?

An abundance of wildlife; beautiful sandy beaches; lush rainforests; magnificent waterfalls; these are only some of the natural wonders that Costa Rica has to offer. In the heart of Central America, it is a country which can boast a strong mix of landscapes and cultures, and a population well-known for its friendliness and hospitality.

Volunteering in Costa Rica

Costa Rica is renowned for its biodiversity and its many national parks; much time and effort has already been put into sustaining its wildlife. Projects Abroad work within four different conservation areas on a monthly rotating basis. Volunteers work at one of or all four of the parks, depending on the length of their placement.

The four national parks where volunteers work are Diria Forest National Park, Barra Honda National Park, Las Baulas Marine National Park and Lomas de Barbudal Biological Reserve. They all cover a substantial area of land and are home to a large number of plant and animal species. Volunteers work alongside local environmental experts and are able to assist with activities such as species monitoring, trail making and environmental education projects.

Why take part in a Conservation project?

Man’s negative impact on the environment is more apparent today than ever before. Unsustainable development, a rapidly growing population, exploitation of natural resources, high pollution levels, over-hunting of animals….. these are just some of the ways in which man has abused and is abusing the earth. The consequences of our actions are serious. In destroying natural habitats and causing the extinction of animal species, we are simultaneously destroying our own habitat and causing potentially irreversible damage, the effects of which will be suffered by future generations.

Taking part in a conservation project will not ‘save the world’; however each volunteer has the power to make a valuable contribution. By preserving a part of the natural world, you are preserving an integral part of the network of life.
